Ely Hero Awards pay tribute to ‘avid supporter’ Mike Rouse

Ely Hero Awards have renamed one of their categories in honour of ex-mayor Mike Rouse.

During the launch party of Ely Hero Awards 2022, the organisers were delighted to announce the re-naming of the Community Champion Award in honour of Mike Rouse, who sadly passed away in May 2022.

The category award is renamed in his honour to “The Mike Rouse Community Champion Award”. Mike was a well-known figure in Ely – a father, an actor, a teacher, a councillor, the Mayor, an author, a historian and a friend to all.

Mike was an avid supporter of the Ely Hero Awards; he encouraged and empowered the team and Ely’s Heroes to do more for others. He attended all the events, always ready with a smile, a joke and the click of his camera.

The re-naming has the blessing of Mike’s family who are thrilled that his legacy can be remembered in this way, in recognition of everything he did for the community. He was a devoted family man, devoted to his trusty camera and his home City of Ely.

The newly renamed Ely Hero Award category will keep his memory alive and inspire the community to “be more like Mike”, a true Community Champion.

Organisers of Ely Hero Awards said “We are honoured to remember and treasure Mike’s legacy through this special Award for everyone to aspire to be a Community Champion just like he was. Mike has done more for the community than we will ever know, so this is a fitting tribute to Mr Ely.”
